Two more reason to have separate objects in layout:
layout display options... true, if you own a SGI and you can get
real-time shaded previews, this is pointless, but let's say you have a
number of highly detailed models in your scene. It will probably take
a while to get a nice wire frame preview of everything. Now, if
you only have one object that contains everything there's not much you
can do. You just have the basic display options: full wire, half wire,
points, bounding box or nothing. But, if you have each object
separately you can select half-wire or bounding box for the complex
objects to save on redraw time...
Plus, as you move an object or the camera, you only have one bounding
box to gauge things by. You'll have no real perception of where the
objects are. If each of your objects is separate then you can get a
really good feeling for where everything is when you move things
around.
